Body-safe materials: what the labels actually mean

The adult products market is barely regulated, which makes materials knowledge genuinely useful rather than academic. This is the non-explicit, practical version.

Non-porous versus porous is the whole question

Non-porous materials — platinum-cure silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel, ABS plastic — have no microscopic structure for bacteria to colonise. They can be fully cleaned, and in the case of glass, steel and pure silicone, sterilised.

Porous materials — jelly rubber, PVC, TPE, "cyberskin" and similar — cannot be. Bacteria survive inside the material regardless of surface cleaning. That is a hygiene fact, not a marketing preference.

Phthalates and the labelling gap

Phthalates are plasticisers used to soften PVC. Several are restricted in children's toys across the EU, the US and Australia. Adult products generally sit outside those regimes, so a product can legally contain compounds that would be prohibited in a teething ring.

"Phthalate-free" is not a certified claim, and neither is "body-safe". The reliable signal is the named material: 100% platinum-cure silicone means something specific; "silicone blend" usually means mostly not silicone.

Cleaning, briefly

Pure silicone, glass and steel tolerate boiling water. Anything with a motor or a battery does not — those get soap and water, and nothing more aggressive.

Silicone lubricant degrades silicone products over time by bonding with the surface. Water-based lubricant avoids the problem entirely, which is why it is the default recommendation.

Storage matters more than people expect

Different materials can react with each other in contact, and softer materials in particular can degrade, discolour or go tacky when stored pressed against something incompatible. Storing items separately, dry, and out of direct sunlight solves nearly all of it.
